A healthy lifestyle can be as sweet as candy!


Is there anything worse in life than realizing that one of your go-to ‘healthy’ foods is actually not that healthy at all? The answer is yes, there are a lot of things that are worse, but regardless…no one likes an imposter. The grocery store is teeming with products marketed as low this and no that, drawing well-meaning people in and fooling them into making choices that are usually highly processed, full or sugar/salt, and downright unhealthy. Food corporations bank on people skipping the labels and trusting the package, and people do because who really has time to read all that fine print? This is one reason I love cooking, it gives me the power! I control what goes into my food, I regulate what I add, and I tailor it to what I like! What is not to love?

Granola is just one of those foods that most people view as healthy, unfortunately it usually isn’t. Like most cereals granola can be high in fat, high fructose corn syrup, and can contain more sugar than a bowl of most breakfast cereal. Making your own granola is the perfect way to cut back on all the unnecessary additives and load up on all of your favorite flavors. I love enjoying my homemade granola with a bowl of plain Greek yogurt and fresh fruit or on top of a refreshing Sugarbowl!

Maple-Cinnamon Pecan Pumpkin Seed Granola

1 1/2 cups rolled oats

1/2 cup pecans

1/4 cup pumpkin seeds

2 tbsp flax seeds

2 tbsp virgin coconut oil, melted

2-3 tbsp honey or grade B maple syrup

2 tsp vanilla

1 tsp maple extract

2 tsp cinnamon

Preheat oven to 300 degrees. In a large bowl, add all of the ingredients. Add the oil before the honey so it will slide of the spoon without sticking. Mix together with clean hands until even and spread on a baking sheet. Bake for 10-15 minutes, allow to cool, and enjoy!

Sweet Greens Sugarbowl

1 cup spinach

1 cup kale, de-stemmed

1/2 cup frozen mango

1/2 cup frozen pineapple

1/2 banana

1 tbsp flax seeds

1 1/2 cups coconut milk

Place all ingredients in a blender and blend on high until well mixed. Pour into glass and enjoy! Screen Shot 2014-09-10 at 4.00.59 PM
