The Answer

The problem: I went a little crazy with the food this past weekend and desperately needed a reboot. The dilemma: my busy upcoming week won’t give me the time or energy I would need to focus on a week-long cleanse. The answer: Say hello to my magic mini-cleanse! Perfect for those who are new to cleansing, don’t want to spend a crazy amount of money, or just don’t have a week to devote! One day, six juices, here we go.

I haven’t been a big ‘cleanser’ in the past. Mostly because they have seemed stupid expensive, and I just love (real) food. You may be asking yourself now, why the hell are you on a cleanse then? Good question. When I was a freshman in college trying to combat the freshman 15, which I now just accept as the inevitable, I went on a fast. For three days I ingested nothing but water. I didn’t tell a lot of people I was doing it, because I was mostly greeted with blank stares and the occasional WTF when I did. But I felt my body and my immune system slowing down, and I was looking for anyway to reset it.


I had read an article about fasting and the wonders it can do for the body’s immune system, and decided I wanted to try it out. I knew I would be low on energy so my walks from my dorm to class would be just about all the exercise I would do. The fast was challenging, required a hell of a lot of self control, and sometimes it downright sucked (like sitting at my sorority chapter meeting while boxes of free cookies were handed out to everyone). The first part of the fast was definitely the hardest and I spent more of my time in bed, but soon the constant hunger faded away and I could focus on my goal to finish. At the end of three days I was surprisingly rejuvenated, energized, and in control (which is a feeling I don’t have often). I also didn’t expect to ease back into eating with a new perspective of how my own body works in terms of my food habits and cravings.

So, I came out of this past weekend feeling a little like I did freshman year…lethargic, bloated, and searching for a way to hit the reset button, juice cleanse it is! My decision to only do a one day cleanse is because I am all about being realistic. I have a lot going on this week (MY LAST WEEK OF CHEM HOLLA!) and I want (and need) the energy to get through it with my body and my mind fully engaged. I know, for myself, if I tried to do a longer-term cleanse I would be pushing myself too far-no bueno! I also went to Rainbow Acres Natural Foods yesterday on a whim and came accross a whole bunch of Suja Juices on sale! I purchased 7 (one I drank on the drive home) and was on my way.

I am now 3 drinks deep on my 6 drink juice cleanse, and I have only caught myself day-dreaming about real food once! I say that’s a success.  The organic juices are seriously delicious, and packed with vitamins, enzymes and nutrients. My fav so far has been the Glow juice, loaded with apple, celery, cucumber, spinach, kale, collards, and mint. I enjoyed this baby for breakfast and it is incredibly refreshing and surprisingly sweet!

I still have three juices to get through, but the cleanse so far has been exactly what I needed. A quick way to flush my system of its toxins and hit the reset button for a new, busy week. I am excited to report how I am feeling health-wise tomorrow, but for now I’ve got some juice to drink!
